Sound Studio App Reviews

Simple yet powerful

This is a very steep price tag for a sound editor that looks very simple and can not do a lot of things. But what you pay for here is your own time, which you will save plenty of if you are like I am. First of all: I own Logic and Pro Tools and many other professional audio software packages. But often times I have a short and simple recording from a choir concert or some speech. And I want to simply cut it into pieces, apply some simple effects (compression, normalization, maybe noise reduction, …) and save it into several files to send to my friends. Since I decided that my pro audio tools would be tremendous overkill for this task, I usually used the free Audacity. This will work fine if you have time to spare or dont do this very often. Then by all means, dont spend the money. But if you want a really quick and elegant editor to be able to work at a fast pace, I say Sound Studio is well worth the money.

Very good app for reasonable price

I have been using Sound Studio since version 3.5. I like it a lot because it is easy to use and is loaded with features. I tried version 4.2 with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and it works well. Editing and processing songs of 10 mins or less is pretty fast and the undo/redo is instantaneous for almost any song length. This makes it easy to compare newly added effects quickly before saving a file. Saving as MP3 is not included but you can download (link is given in the user manual) a free GNU plug-in that works well. The pitch/tempo filter is good but I think the quality of the tempo effect can be vastly improved. To give it 5 stars, I would like to see some features that facilitate the restoration of music recorded from vinyl records and cassette tapes. Like removing pops and hiss and so on. Even though it contains reverb, echo, etc. I would like to have the addition of surround 3D simulation effects where you can adjust the location of the speakers and preview the effect before applying to the sound file. I find this app very useful for someone who wants to modify a song or enhance the quality of a recording. For example, removing parts of a song that you dont like, boosting the bass of a song to a satisfactory level or engineer the sound quality of a list of songs and make a CD that plays nicely on your car audio system.

Decent

Decent. I would like to see more functionality brought to the play. When Im making cuts, Id like to be able to hear the cut before making it so a "Play Unselected" would be a useful feature to add. Also a "play view only" would be good. When mixing, two pieces having a "sync" feature to ensure the tempo is the same would be a great add too.

Great software, even for beginners

I have been using sound studio for very simple audio editing (change format, improve live recording, separate an audio recording in multiple tracks) and find it easy to use, powerful and convenient. Dont have to be an audio wizard to enjoy it!

Stable with Many Features

I have been using Sound Studio to edit podcasts since version 3.0 was released. It is very stable, and it has many useful and effective filters. I use the filters mainly for cleaning up bad-quality podcasts. The compressor filter is especially useful for podcasts with widely varying sound levels. I have also used the app for recordings and it has no problem recording for over 3 hours, creating a 2GB .aif file.

What happened to MP3?

You used to be able to save or convert a file to MP3 format. What happened?

Very good

and excellent support!

excellent audio waveform editor

sound studio has been around since the old OS9 days, and has a clean document-oriented interface. i find the method of selecting audio waveforms with both the mouse and keyboard cursor very intuitive and this provides for quick and easy edits on raw audio waveforms. this new version on the app store adds import/export in numerous standard audio formats. the only thing i found missing was that i had to go repeatedly into Preferences to switch back and forth between the four inputs on my scarlett 6i6 usb audio interface — it would have been much easier if one could select the audio input interface & input channel in the toolbar along the top of the document window.

I love this program but...

I can only give it one star as you cannot do multiple usb inputs in a session.

Clean and Simple, best wave editor

This is my app for detailed audio editing. I’ve had it a long time, with two copies purchased before it even appeared in the Mac App Store. That’s right, two CD’s in a fat case with paper manuals. I see the other ratings, but stand by my five star because the complains seem to be about what’s not in it. But it does everything advertised and does it easily and quickly. Most important for me is that it is uncluttered. It may only do simple editing, but that’s what I want! Clean, simple, detailed editing. I’ll multitrack record with Logic or GarageBand, but when I have to cut and clean a wave form, there simply isn’t anything better than Sound Studio.

Add Russian!!!

Excellent sound editor! Add please Russian!!!

Its just great

Guys, your program is absolutely stunning in terms of speed of work, proessing performance. Gestures works very fluid, navigation is fast. For my purposes its the best audio editor. When you switch to Sound Studio from WaveEditor (yes, my fault) its like fresh breeze. My greatest software purchase. Thank you! p.s. Tiny negative moment – app looks a little bit oldy in Yosemite. But again – its just great instrument.

Great App and support

I used sound studio back when it was a freeverse software and loved it then. Recently downlowded the trial version from their website to batch process files with it’s Automator actions. My actions worked great however after purchasing the software via the App Store I found that my automator actions were no longer available also I could not seem to get the LAME .mp3 encoder working. I contacted FeltTip via their website and explained my problems. I receievd an email and within an hour had my issues resolved. In the end I had to download the trial version again and was given the steps to take to activate that version. Once I did that I found that my automator actions as well as the LAME encoder was working again.

Present Version of Sound Studio

Of the four music editing apps I have tried, this is the best. I use it mainly to convert vinyl records to CD. I found more difficult to erase the scratch sounds with this version than with the older ones.

Who needs Cool Edit or Adobe Audacity?

This is definitely a league apart from the more expensive Toast (with included Spin Doctor). It may not be as colorful as Roxio’s hyped product, but it permits precise and relatively easy editing of wave patterns. It’s not a complicated program for the audiophile who wishes to edit more than one track and to edit “sound on sound." But for editing a single broadcast, or podcast, or musical file, nothing could be more clear, precise and user-friendly. Moreover, the audio is professional quality (I use it for NPR broadcasts), and if you’re “into effects,” this program offers as many as Adobe Audacity and other expensive programs. One notable feature that’s been added to this edition: Automatic and Timer Recording. In fact, the timer setting could not be more easy to set and convenient to review. Sound Studio is definitely not resting on its laurels. And yet the company has lowered its price for an unbeatable value.

great software

Not only is this great software, I and places that I work at archiving old audio recordings and creating and editing podcasts own three licences for the software. The customer service is great. When a software update broke an old feature that I was using they quickly e-mailed me a link to the previous version. If you are editing any type of two track audio and want to easily be able to save it in multiple file formats this is the software to use. Easy to get around, and

Good piece of software

Its a well built software, logical and accurate. The efforts to make it accessible with assistive technology are noticeable, thank you! With 2 additional features, the app would be perfect to my use. 1. simultaneous multitrack recording. Whether its through multiple soundcards or one soundcard with multiple input channels, I would love to be able to map my channels to different tracks when recording. 2. I use VoiceOver and cannot access the Audo Unit interface. Please add the option to use a generic interface for Audio Units. Amadeus Pro has this option in advanced preferences. All the best and congrats!

Used this app for many years.

Love this app, but there seems to be a couple bugs in the last version. The only way to save as a different format is by doing the selection save option and that option doesnt give you the ability to not hide the extentions of the file type. Hope they fix these soon.

Used to be good

This latest version 4.5 doesnt allow to choose anymore recording channel when using Firewire as your input. Please return that functionality. the app is useless now

Where is update???

This was updated to version 4.5.2 by Felt Tip at least two months ago Felt Tip said that the update would be posted by the App Store since I bought it from the App Store and that is the only way to get it. The App Store is new to me. Where else can I find the update from 4.5 to 4.5.2 ?? Do I have to wait for Apple to post it or can I find it somewhere else ?? Very good program but there have been several changes in the update. I probably should have bought it directly of from some other vendor.
